2006 predictions

Jon’s 2006 predictions were just too obvious and damn him, he promised he wouldn’t tell anyone my schedule either! So, I thought I would have a go at making some of my own predictions, here goes:

1st January 2006

On the 1st of January 2006 the world will end but old, bad jokes will prevail and everyone will be too hung over to notice.

9th January 2006

I will turn 33, so send me a fucking present or kiss my even older, more miserable, hairier ass!

Actually, no, don’t send me presents or greetings; I prefer to wallow, on this special day, in my own self-pity and self-loathing but I want you to know I am doing so, alright! Thanks.

Face and sIFR

Flash text replacement (sIFR) and Faruk’s Animated CSS Enhancements will take standards-based web sites to a new level of swishness and coolness.

Unfortunately, like all good tools there will be some poor misguided fools who abuse them (probably me) and we are sure to see some real shockers put out under the guise of “web standards”.

Joshuaink gets sold

Joshuaink will be sold off to the lowest bidder and I will activate the escape pod, whilst standing up.

Web 2.0

A shit load of Web 2.0 applications will be launched that I never knew I couldn’t live without. I will use them for a week, try my hardest to like them and ultimately drop them like a bad habit.

iTunes

People will get sick to death of not being able to move the music they paid for around more easily and will return in droves to vinyl and cassette and possibly wax in some extreme cases.

Colours

White will dominate the landscape and dark greys and blacks will continue to dominate in the text department. At least one site will assault our senses with…. errr, a really radical colour.

People to watch

Fit young chicks with nice tits. That’s the people this dirty old bastard will be watching this coming year.

    Great line-up of things that could or could not happen…(hopefully could, err, I mean would…will happen!) This is certainly one of the more light-hearted looks ahead at 2006…..and not one tiny mention of IE7!!!!!

    When Mac switch over to Intel chips will you be making a big song and dance about it?
    My site will still probably be something of a Textpattern building site well into the spring…(complete with loud, obnoxious builders!)

    I think it’s hard to predict how some things will happen in 2006 because I mean: look how 2005 was a real bag of surprises and 2006 will be just as messed-up! :)

    Oh my god, 9 January is my birthday too so that makes you exactly 7 years old than me! Nothing can change that :)

    I wonder when I was 10 years old, that makes you 17. Oh, imagine John Oxton in school! Haha. Enough said.

    Sorry to be a party pooper but I doubt I get excited with Faruk’s Animated CSS Enhancements.

    I have my web browser disable JavaScript so I don’t see any goodness coming out from FACE or any form of graceful degradation!

    I agree with your other predictions though.

    Come on Web 2.0 or 2.1 just in case I under-predicted the future.

    I don’t want to hijack (really) but I’ve been wondering for a while when I hear this so:

    Martin: Why do you disable javascript? I can understand doing it for testing – but why always browse that way? Do you also disable your electric car windows, and remove the flush handle from your toilet? (meant in good humor). I just don’t get it.

    Security reasons? Modern browsers address that.

    Shed some light if you will. Someone please. thnks.

    Martin; I was wondering the same thing. Why disable javascript for browsing?

    I mean I dislike using javascript in webdesign (maybe becasue im not that great at it). And some javascript actions are unnecesary and can be done without javascript.

    Same here. Especially if you want to make good use of a site like Flickr, disabling Javascript is just really partypooping yourself.

    There’s a lot of great things one misses out of with JS disabled. And then I’m not talking about FACE, really, although you can see how I’d feel the same about that ;)

    To PR, Lowell and Faruk,

    I used a Firefox extension called No Script for security purposes especially when I visit poorly designed sites that throw nasty popups or other security exploits (more than I thought when I started using No Script), or I can go to a site which uses Google Analytics, it wouldn’t know I was even there! :) Serves them right to think one can rely 100% on JavaScript to work as it is really is an “optional” layer of a web page where content is still king.

    Anyway, I agree with you all that having JavaScript enabled gives me a more rewarding experience especially in terms of usability and presentation. It still doesn’t mean I shouldn’t disable JavaScript as I already have the choice anyway. No Script has already or will empower people more to make more of those web-related decisions such as turning on/off JavaScript.

    Another reason is that I am not even sure that every user agent (including desktop, mobile, tv, tty, and so on) actually has support for JavaScript.

    Anyway, I would like to retract from my previous statement about FACE. I think there is a place for FACE in the future as I no longer see anything wrong with it. Good work Faruk, the man behind it! Nice to meet you by the way :)
