We're getting a damn Audi and that's that

Saturday November 5, 2005

See already you are impressed right? That’s right people I am soon to be the proud owner of an Audi.. estate. Okay so now you’re slightly less impressed, it’s got some serious booty going down but that’s okay, it’s still an Audi.

For that last two and a half years I have had the deeply humiliating displeasure of owning a Ford Mondeo and if ever there was a car designed to remove your soul bit by bit the Mundaneo is it. Fact is it’s been a good, solid, reliable car and has served us well but I hate everything it stands for and can’t wait to see the back of it.

So the debate began, four door, no two door, little car, three kids, helllooo!? Let’s buy two cars and a scooter?

By chance the garage down the road happened to have a second hand Audi estate and a second hand Volvo estate both within our price range. For me there was no pause for thought, it had to be the Audi. What car do you own John? I own an Audi. Oh really, wow that’s great you must be doing okay then? Well err…

What car do you own John? A Volvo. Oh that’s nice (puts on coat), reliable cars, new shape? No older shape… pfffft.. Hello, no wait come back!

But the Missus wanted to look in to the Volvo anyway. You look in to it all you like said I, pick your window, front one, back one all the ones down the side. Hell I’ll even help you up on the roof so you can look in to it from the sun roof. Yes, you look in to it girlfriend but we are having the Audi. Uuuuhuh!

So that’s it, I don’t give a toss if the Volvo is the better of the two (though I don’t think it is) I refused point blank to be lumbered with another dog ugly car for three years. It might not be the newest shaped Audi but it’s still easy on the eye and it’s still a whole heap better looking than the other option.

Just be wary of the servicing costs, they make you pay for that brand one way or the other.

Must say I do like those Audi A4 estates with the twin pipes though…. yum.

So why not hold a Get-Oxton-A-Ferrari-Drive on your journal?

    Worked for Kottke, didn’t it?

I’ve got an Audi estate – they’re great cars – and once you go for an estate, apparently there’s no turning back.

Audi estates are rocktastic! Especially if they have that little RS4 badge on the back…

Sounds like great fun. I’ve never dealt with an Audi estate, but I have an Audi A6, and well, the car has been amazing and an absolute pleasure to own.

Also as far as the whole issue of maintenance is concerned, the Audi folks seem to be really good about it all.

I like my little german polo.

She is red and purrs like a happy kitten whenever I pump her gas pedal.

    “Schneller, SCHNELLER!”
    “Yeah? You like that?”
    “Fahren Sie ein St?ºck zur?ºck!”
    “No problem…how…that?”
    “Ja, ja…”

That’s just reversing into my drive.

We had an A4 for a while, great cars, albeit a bit Taxi like….

Got board with it pretty quickly and did not like the tie wearer image it gave me..

Swapped it for a Focus (Mum and two Kids) and Mini Cooper…

Now we have the family car plus I get two half hour Go-Kart rides everyday….

Do you own a hamper… you will soon!

I own a 1987 Toyota Starlet and I love it. My favourite cars are the ones that never ever break.

This should tell you something about the allure of an Audi: I drove an 8 year old A4 (sedan/saloon/whatever-the-hell-you-want-to-call-a-four-door) up until 2 years ago. Despite having some seriously messed up electrical work (my sunroof would open up whenever it saw fit‚Äìwhich usually meant while I was driving on the freeway in a snow storm), and parts requiring the signing over the deed to your house, I’m seriously looking at replacing my mazda6, a car that I love and have had no problems with whatsoever, with another A4…

Maybe that’s less to do with the allure, and more to do with some serious emotional issues…

beautiful cars and on the whole they’re built like a brick shit house – but watch out for problems with the suspension especially if its an older model.

Nah! You see everyone goes on about german reliability. Well if you saw the stats you may be a bit disgusted.

My father has been a mechanic for 30+ years, and has worked for both audi, fiat, and nissan.

He’ll tell you all the time, buy japanese. You can’t beat the reliability. Audis are very nice and all, but the electricals are pretty damn appaling on them.

And if the volvos one of the suare ones, like the 850’s or whatever, then I’d rahter have that. I personally think they look a lot cooler. They have that surf look about them.

AkaXakA: Kottke has a Ferrari?! Son of a bitch! :)

Neil (Ford): You’re not right in the head….you know that right? #Laughs # Never change…please.

I bet Graham drives a Volvo Estate and he’s being quiet about it…. #pinches self #

John: I think you made the right choice for all the right reasons and the Swedish lump of lard didn’t get a look in – which was the way it should be!
Ignore the comments about high maintenance/running costs for the Audi…(not much different to a Volvo actually). Is it a thrifty diesel (Audi’s are well-known for their excellent diesel engines) or the conventional petrolhead?

Okay…I’m saving further comments about cars for private correspondance only as I’m sure I’m going on far too long about it all anyway.

My neighbour has an audi (one of the new shiny black ones).
I don’t think he was too pleased to see cement dust from my cement-mixer all over it… oh well.

Congrats on the Audi… Googling tells me an Estate is what we call a Station Wagon. Estate just sounds a lot classier than “wagon.”
