@Media 2005 pub meet?

Thursday January 13, 2005

There seems to be a little bit of interest in a meeting in the pub after @media 2005. I can assure you, if you ain't British, you've never experienced anything quite like a good old fashioned UK booze up. Oh my!

So, if you are coming along and you fancy a meet up afterwards, add your name here. Maybe we can get someone who knows Mr. Zeldman to ask him to come along too!

Update

Word on the street is that @media themselves may organise a pub meet. If that goes ahead I am sure Patrick will let us know!

Not sure about the conference yet. It’s either Zeldman, Bowman, etc or a new mac mini.

Either way, you can’t keep me away from a proper British piss up. :)
  2. Anton

    1634 days ago

    Wish I could be there!
  3. andy

    1634 days ago

I want to go dressed as the baby jesus.
  4. Martin

    1634 days ago

Oh go on then! You twisted my arm!
  5. Patrick H. Lauke

    1634 days ago

just email zeldman and see what he says…that’s what i always do. and yeh, depending on what hotel i’ll be staying at, i’m up for a pint or two as well
  6. Malarkey

    1634 days ago

Oh goodness me… if Patrick is coming, someone tell London to get more beer in…
  7. Colly

    1634 days ago

Well, you already know I’ll be there, John. Lets not meet in that hectic Cov Garden dive though – something a bit more trad English would be nice. A bit more “Coach and Horses” and a bit less “Bojangles”.

I like the idea of day two being a washout because we took all the Americans drinking. Trouble in web world..
  8. John Oxton

    1634 days ago

Patrick: Okay, I’ll see how many names get gathered and I’ll email Zeldman and Bowman if we get a few.

Colly: You’re way ahead of me, I wanted to see how many people are up for coming and maybe organise a pub with a private room. Remembering what fun 9 of us had trying to find a seat!!
  9. Martin

    1634 days ago

Are the tickets for this going to be cheaper than the actual event? In fact, which is becoming more important, the conference or the piss up? ;)
  10. Colly

    1634 days ago

    The piss-up.
  11. Peter J.Lambert

    1634 days ago

    Consider my name down.

I’ve not convinced The Boss to get me the ticket yet, but if I’m at the conference, I’ll be at the piss up.

    <finger type=”wagging”>
This is supposed to be a serious event! Now, settle down!

  13. Keith Bell

    1634 days ago

Still too early to know if I can make it to the conference, but if I can, I’m game for the partaking of an agreeable libation in convivial company…
  14. John Oxton

    1634 days ago

Hee hee.. I’d like to see you say that after a few beers! ;-)

I know it is very early days but I thought it was worth gauging interest before attempting to make any solid arrangements. Looking good thus far!
  15. kleida

    1634 days ago

Given that I can’t afford the conference fee and know none of you I shan’t be there but if you’re after decent pubs near the venue head to London Bridge/Borough Market – loads of fine traditional English boozers. The Market Porter, Globe and George should do for an aperitif.
  16. John Oxton

    1634 days ago

Remember Kleida, a stranger is a friend you don’t know yet.

I don’t know any of these crazy fools who comment on this site, well okay maybe Malarkey and Colly (but I’ll deny that in court). That’s why we are meeting up!

Thanks for the pubs lead though! :-)
  17. Sean Darling

    1634 days ago

Im currently trying to persuade my boss to send me… If that goes well then I will come to to the piss up too (aslong as no-one minds random strangers like me being there)! Now this is what I call networking! :o)
  18. Andy Mac

    1634 days ago

    Count me in :)

If I can afford the conference I’ll be up for that too.

And another suggestion regarding a meeting place – the 6th floor bar of Tate Modern is a definite contender. Superb views!
  19. Craig

    1634 days ago

Slam a few back for me :)
  20. Turnip

    1634 days ago

“a stranger is a friend you don’t know yet”

Or an enemy you haven’t punched yet ;-).
  21. John Oxton

    1634 days ago

You do realise that if you comment here, you are on the mailing list? There’s no getting off it either and all emails will be used to gain free trial access to porn websites, if I think you are not serious about coming that is! You ‘ave been warned! ;-)
  22. Malarkey

    1634 days ago

    I don’t know you!

And anyway, I thought that this was the Lambretta Owners’ Forum… (what with the lack of any design going on!)
  23. John Oxton

    1634 days ago

What do you mean lack of design? This is it, I have finished. Can I have a web standards award now please!?
  24. paul haine

    1634 days ago

Though I don’t know you and you don’t know me, assuming I can convince The Company to send me along, I’ll most likely be there in the pub as well.
  25. John Oxton

    1634 days ago

You live in Oxford don’t ya Paul, That’s just down the road from me, and Jon for that matter. We can get a lift off you then? ;-)
  26. Turnip

    1634 days ago

You (John Oxton) do realise that while conversing with Jonathan Leighton (“Me”) by commenting on this weblog internet application (“Blog”), typing Your email address is the equivilant of a signature and You are agreeing to provide Me with the sum of £10,000 (Ten Thousand Pounds Sterling) per month?

For further information please see the contract for life under Section 42: The Jonathan Leighton is holy Act, 1989.

(If your comment was not directed at me, that’s okay, you are still bound to the aforementioned terms).
  27. Roger Johansson

    1634 days ago

Count me in if I can make it London for the booze.. err.. conference.
  28. Roger Johansson

    1634 days ago

Looks like I’ve already had some of that booze… I meant to say “make it to London”. Duh.
  29. Shawn Grimes

    1634 days ago

Wow, look at all the boozers. Wish I could come, but I live in the “states” :( Hope you all have a blast and I expect to see a lengthy post on all the happenings the day after John, be it halfassed or not :p
  30. Chris McLeod

    1633 days ago

Bah. I can’t go. My employer won’t send me and my missus won’t let me.

And I was hoping to have the chance to get wrecked in such “reputable” company…
  31. John Oxton

    1633 days ago

What is wrong with you guys? Now lookie see… this is how to attend the conference. Register now so you get a £50 discount (i.e. Boooooze money) don’t tell the Missus until the day before.

I didn’t ask my Missus actually… hmmm if I suddenly st
  32. Patrick

    1633 days ago

I love the fact that the most commented blog post on the web relating to @media 2005 centres around bwooz.

I hear on the grapevine that the organisers are shameful pissheads and may be planning a waterhole related gathering (depending on numbers) post-coference as it is…
  33. John Oxton

    1633 days ago

I have heard rumours about one of those guys a vivabit by the name of dawg… meant to be a right beer monster.
  34. Steve

    1633 days ago

Well, i read most of the blogs from people on here (colley, Malarkey, Budd, Oxton et al) so it would be nice to put faces to names, but at £395 +vat i’m relying on my boss coming up trumps and doing something they’ve never done before – provide a budget for ‘training’. But who knows, a bit of freelance here and there and maybe just maybe i’ll afford it. Looks to good to miss though.
  35. Derek Featherstone

    1633 days ago

If I make it there (which I plan to), I will be attending all piss-ups that are scheduled, all piss-ups that aren’t scheduled, and any others that the first two batches don’t cover…

Once I figure it out, rest assured, one or more of you lot will be getting emails from me to arrange pickup at the airport and whatever else it is that can reasonably be arranged…

So, yes, add me to the list… :)
  36. jolo

    1633 days ago

I hope I could make it but honestly I cannot. So enjoy guys :)
  37. paul haine

    1633 days ago

John, I’m happy to give you and Jon Hicks a lift, if somebody else can provide a car and some driving lessons.
  38. Hayo

    1633 days ago

Bah. can anyone knock out the door people at the conf? Only way for me to get in. Poor little dutch boys don’t have that kindof money, and they don’t even offer student discounts.
  39. Andy Budd

    1632 days ago

An official post conference social would be good.
  40. Jan Brasna

    1629 days ago

Not yet decided about the conference (yeah, the damn ticket ;’( ...), however considering to see you guys in the pub afterwards :)
  41. LintHuman

    1629 days ago

If you’re still taking names, add mine to the hat. Just registered!
  42. Tom Armitage

    1628 days ago

There’s no way my company would stump to send me (or anyone) to such an event, but last I heard pubs didn’t charge for attendance, so I’d definitely be interested in meeting all you fine fellows (who provide me with such useful reference material)... and getting booz0red… by which I mean lightly inebriated… into the process. Plus, I live in London; no excuse.
  43. Matthew Pennell

    1628 days ago

I’ll be there, courtesy of work stumping up for tickets; with the names signing up for the boozing, you could probably charge more than the event itself to attend!

And can I be the first to make the inevitable joke…

Q: What does a web standards guru do when he’s had too much to drink at @media?

    A: He uses a table to layout…
  44. John Oxton

    1628 days ago

    LOL!
  45. Kev

    1627 days ago

@Matthew: You owe me a new monitor, I just spat coffee all over this one ;o)

As my wife will inconsiderately be within a day or so of dropping my latest progeny I’ll be unable to attend neither the meet nor the piss up. For the honour of Old Blighty you all owe it to yourselves to get so drunk you either get @Media2005 tattoos or projectile vomit all through the second day. I’ll think you’re all hardcore if you do both.
  46. Matthew Pennell

    1627 days ago

@Kev: You can have the monitor that came with my new Mac Mini… ;o)
  47. daveeee

    1625 days ago

yayness! A London meet; a place to rid myself of the remains of my student load by buying mucho biru for people I’ve never met on the net. Would be great to put a voice & character to faces and sites of the great & masterful.

While not yet a design-guru myself, I’d love to come along, and yay, live by Borough market (London Bridge), home of Bridget Jones, free-range beers, and great British pubs (Hat tip to Kleida.) Better ready the spare liver again . . .
  48. Steve Urmston

    1624 days ago

I’ve just finished a good week, so I got a wee bit more money with @media’s name on it. I would definitely be up for an after hours piss-up, in fact I consider it essential!
  49. Tomas

    1624 days ago

Folks, could you please block google from this discussion? If my supervisor reads this she’ll cancel the flight I booked last week :-)

    I’m in.

One word of warning though: last time I attended one of those international piss-ups (a.k.a. WCAG WG F2F) the Brits couldn’t find their way back to the hotel and it was only 2 a.m. So you better get prepared.
  50. John Oxton

    1623 days ago

Hee hee Tomas… it sounds like you have already taken part in what can only be described as a ‘classic’ British piss-up. ;-)

Assuming that I manage to set aside some mohoney, I’d definately be up for some beverages post-conference. Should probably watch it though, as will probably be staying with my girlfriend’s family – wouldn’t want to turn up at their door off my face!
  52. Stephane Deschamps (nota-bene.org)

    1620 days ago

Good news: I’m going to be granted the right to come by the powers-that-be at my company.

If french people are allowed at the bash, count me in then :)

No idea if that mailing list that you mentioned is still knocking about, but I just got my lovely cut price ticket (nothing like leaving it ‘til the last minute), and all I need now is a couple of drinks to wash it down.

Hopefully I’ll get to see some of the many people who have commented above staggering about the place at some point. And hopefully I’ll even recognise some of them the following day.
  54. Arjen Geerse

    1556 days ago

Some dutch Web standards fetishists (is that a word?) are coming to look for drinks…

    Get in me belly!
  55. Dan

    1555 days ago

I’m jetting in from LA for the piss up. I’ve been away from home for ages and I require tradtional english cider! Rarrgh!
  56. dotjay

    1548 days ago

I’m now officially attending the conference (as opposed to sneaking in the back door?), but still need to sort where I’m staying.

Talking of recognising people, I’ve set up an @media 2005 group on Flickr. Bung up yer photo if you’re feelin’ pretty!

I’ll go—I’ll supply the Irish factor, ie. drinking y’all under the table. Hopefully I’ll get to meet everybody after reading your blogs for so long.

I guess a few beers never hurt anyone. Seems like there will be plenty of party opportunities after the official programme..?
